For TheTinSoldier.eu, a local producer of tin soldiers in Antwerp, we had to print high quality soldiers of the Belgian army. The intention is to use these later on to make negative molds. These molds will later be filled with Tin to realize the final design.
Because the 3D models were incredibly detailed, we decided to manufacture them using the SLA printing technique. The challenge was to place the support so that front details and face are printed cleanly. As a result, we mainly placed supports manually.
The details were so small that even the lightest support touched too much surface area and ate up details. Finally, in the slicer program chitubox, we made the tangents of lightsupport even smaller. Medium and Heavy support we only put in crucial places.
After printing out, these supports must also be meticulously removed. Then we sanded down the interfaces with P220 sandpaper.
The result is a detailed final model ready for molding.
