Model with inlaid wood

FDM printing & post-processing of an architectural model

For Ecohouse/Brensj we printed an architectural model in 4 different compartments.

These compartments can then be taken apart to observe the inside of the house.

All parts are completely sanded down and then leveled with filler, this gives the final model a smooth finish and you can no longer see any print lines.

Project Details

The first step was to make the forwarded file print-ready.

Thus, we split the 3D model into 4 printable parts.

Furthermore, we also had to provide coves into which the wooden boards, after sanding and leveling, can be glued.

We did this by using boolean operators in Blender3D.

We then printed out the parts with a layer height of .2mm and a layer thickness of .6mm.

By increasing the layer thickness we obtain a stronger print with fewer printing hours.

An additional challenge was the alignment of the various modules to one another. After all, the PCBs of the FDM printers are never completely straight...

In the end, we used filler to fill in all the discrepancies and then sanded it off straight.

This is followed by sanding with 5 different strengths: P60, P80, P120, P220 and finally P320

Starting at P120, we add filler to the model. This step is repeated for each sanding strength to obtain an even result.

After the model is completely dusted we start gluing in the various wooden spacers.

To make this process as efficient as possible, we printed out several templates beforehand.

This allows us to quickly cut out different surfaces without having to measure all the sizes again and again.
